Why change ORCA now?

Good question. Current ORCA is made up of outdated technology and needs replacement. Additionally, the new ORCA system will have the technical ability to scale within the Puget Sound communities easier which will allow us to build new improvements to the system quicker than before.

ORCA customers and transit riders were asked to comment on the current ORCA system. Over 2,600 people responded. Customers confirmed that ORCA has made traveling throughout the region easier. The feedback we received from the survey led us to keep the things customers like and ensure the new ORCA will:

  • Offer a mobile app to manage your account and pay your fare
  • Instantly load value and products to your ORCA account
  • Offer more retail locations to buy ORCA cards and add value
  • Feature an improved website that makes it easier to manage your account

What is the new ORCA?

The new ORCA is an upgraded fare payment system that is used by transit Agencies in the Puget Sound region. These include Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro, Kitsap Transit, Pierce Transit, Sound Transit and Washington State Ferries. It builds on the existing ORCA system and offers transit riders new and improved ways to pay their fare.

When will the new ORCA launch?

We’ll start by launching a new website and mobile app in Early 2022, which will improve account access and make account management easier. You’ll be able to link your existing ORCA card or get a new one to take advantage of new and improved account management tools so you can manage your ORCA card on the go. Later in 2022, we’ll add more ways to pay, including tap-to-pay with your smartphone and launching a new card and retail network. The retail network will enable you to purchase and reload cards at more retail locations. After the new app, website and new retail stores are available, we’ll add a card-less tap-to-to pay option for smartphones.

Will I need to replace my ORCA card?

You don’t need to replace your card. When next-gen ORCA launches, you’ll be able to continue using your card as you do today while also taking advantage of the improvements that the new system has to offer. Management of your existing card will move to myORCA.com or on the myORCA app for iOS or Android.

Will the website get an upgrade?

Absolutely! We are developing a brand-new website that will make life much easier for all ORCA customers. The old orcacard.com and orcacard.biz websites will be replaced with a new functional website at myORCA.com. It will allow riders to access and manage their account from anywhere, with an improved, easy to use app and website. The website will also be optimized for mobile users, so your online experience is smooth, even on the go.

Will there be an ORCA app for smartphones?

Yes! We will launch a brand-new mobile app for ORCA customers available on iOS and Android that will eventually make carrying a physical card optional. You will be able to load and pay fare from your device, as well as access card balance, transaction information, and trip history.

Can I pay with my smartphone?

At launch, you will be able to load and fully manage your card using the myORCA app on your iOS or Android smartphone. However, the tap-to-pay virtual card feature will not be available until late 2022.

Will my rides become more expensive?

No, the new ORCA launch will not impact any fares.

Will card loading be quicker in the new system?

Yes! Customers have told us that this was the biggest opportunity for improvement with the new ORCA system. We’re happy to say that loading funds and other actions will all be instantaneous in the new ORCA no matter where it’s done.

Will my autoload settings and other online account information migrate to the new system?

No, your online account information, including autoload settings, will not transfer to the new system. However, the system will still know if your card was registered or not so your balance will remain protected until you establish a new next-generation ORCA account on myORCA.com or in the myORCA app after launch. Read how you can transfer your card and create a next-gen account here.

Will there be more sales locations?

Yes! There will be at least twice as many retail locations for purchasing ORCA cards and loading value in mid 2022. We expect even more locations to join the ORCA retail network over time. Participating transit agencies will also be adding additional ticket vending machines at train stations and transit hubs.

What else is new?

We are replacing many legacy ORCA systems. These include card readers, data systems, reporting platforms, ticket vending machines, and numerous other parts of the old infrastructure. We built the new ORCA with flexibility in mind so it will be easier in the future to add new capabilities and functions than it was in the past.
